CASE STUDY: Rhulani
I am a sucker for horror and supernatural movies and a fan of metal rock and hip-
hop music. Being a South African teenager comes with its ups and downs.
Sometimes it becomes a living nightmare because there is not a single day that a person
like me does not face discrimination unless we spend our time indoors. This is because I
was born with a medical condition called albinism. Growing up and now as a teenager I’ve
been called names such as “mlungu”. People also point at me and will say things like I
bath with milk. I once had an
emotional breakdown, but through the support of my parents, I overcame it.
1.1 Investigate the challenges faced by individuals with albinism and discuss the
impact these difficulties can have on their daily lives.
People with albinism have it tough because their bodies lack melanin,
the pigment that gives color to our skin, hair, and eyes. This makes
them sensitive to sunlight. They have visual impairment, often leading to
sunburns and eye problems.
But it's not just physical challenges. They also face teasing, bullying,
and exclusion because they look different. Individuals with albinism
often face discrimination and social stigma due to their physical
appearance. They may be subjected to derogatory comments, bullying,
and exclusion from social activities. Some people even believe weird
myths about them. This treatment can make them feel really bad about
themselves and lonely.
Because of all this, they might struggle to do everyday things like seeing
clearly, going outside without getting hurt, or feeling good about
themselves. Also, they might not have access to the same opportunities
as others, like good healthcare and education.
,People with albinism deal with a lot, from physical discomfort to feeling
left out, and they need understanding and support from others to thrive.
1.2 Discuss the impact of Rhulani’s medical condition on his social life and
interactions with peers. How did he managed to maintain a positive outlook
despite facing discrimination?
Rhulani's condition, albinism, probably affected how he made friends and hung
out with people. Because he looked different, others might have made fun of
him or left him out of things. But he stayed positive, thanks to his parents'
support. They likely cheered him up and made him feel good about himself.
Also, he found comfort in stuff he loved, like scary movies and music. These
things probably helped him meet people who accepted him.
Even though he faced tough times, Rhulani didn't let it get him down. He might
have talked to friends or adults he trusted about how he felt. Plus, he might
have found ways to relax, like meditating or doing things he enjoyed.
Rhulani stayed upbeat despite the challenges he faced, showing how strong
he is. With his parents' help and his interests, he found ways to feel good
about himself and keep going.
1.3 Identify two inclusive education policies aimed at safeguarding learners with
albinism in school environments. Explain how these policies can effectively protect
them.
Anti-Discrimination Policy
This policy ensures that all students, including those with albinism, are treated fairly
and without discrimination based on their appearance or medical condition. It
prohibits bullying, teasing, or exclusion of students with albinism and promotes a
safe and inclusive school environment where every student feels respected and
valued.
Accessibility Policy
, This policy ensures that school facilities, materials, and resources are accessible to
learners with albinism. It may include provisions for accommodations such as large-
print materials, assistive technology, shaded areas for outdoor activities, and
support from specialized educators or aides. Making the school environment more
accessible, this policy enables students with albinism to fully participate in
educational activities and achieve academic success.
These policies can effectively protect learners with albinism by promoting
awareness, understanding, and acceptance among Learners, teachers, and school
staff. They establish clear guidelines for addressing discrimination and ensuring
equal opportunities for all learners, regardless of their medical condition. Also, they
provide mechanisms for addressing instances of discrimination or barriers to
access, such as reporting procedures and support services for affected learners.
These policies create a supportive and inclusive school culture where learners with
albinism can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Question 2
