AQA A-LEVEL SPANISH Paper 1 Listening, Reading and Writing Insert 2024 Every November 20, half a thousand extreme rightists gather in the Valley of the Fallen, in Madrid, attracted by a mass for the anniversary of the dictator Franco. In recent years, the tone of the ceremony has been different, especially knowing that the intention of the Socialist Party is to exhume the body. The mass is attended by Franco's great-grandson, who always asks for “respect” for his family. He never speaks out about the exhumation or about where his great-grandfather should or should not be buried. The president of the Francisco Franco Foundation, an association that the socialists intend to outlaw and which, in previous years, has organized similar ceremonies in other autonomous communities, but with a small audience, is also present there. The dictator's family has a tomb in Madrid's Almudena cathedral, but the authorities wouldn't allow Franco to be buried there, as it's close to where Franco used to preside over military parades during the dictatorship. Pilar Gutiérrez, of the Movement for Spain, has started a campaign so that there is one day each year when the memory of the dictator is celebrated. He believes that he saved the country and stopped communism after the Civil War.
