Deontology-Questions and Answers Graded A+ What is Deontology - ANSWER-It is an ethical theory which states that you should consider what is right or wrong depending on the action itself, instead of focusing on the consequences they cause. What sort of argument is Deontology? - ANSWER-Kant's deontological argument is a priori meaning you don't need experience for it Who is the main thinker of Deontology - ANSWER-Immanuel Kant was not the inventor of this ethical theory, however is the most influential deontological thinker. Kant ()was a german philosopher who developed the deontological argument often referred to as the Kantian ethics or the categorical imperative. What is his main argument? - ANSWER-He believed that actions are good will and that good will is the only good thing in the world. The only thing that mattered in ethical decision making was the will or motive of a moral agent. What is the Categorical imperative? - ANSWER-The Categorical Imperative is a rule that must be followed because it is good and an end in itself. What is the Hypothetical imperative? - ANSWER-Hypothetical imperative which states that a rule must be enforced to achieve a consequence or aim of some sort. Why did Kant follow the Hypothetical imperative? - ANSWER-Kant didn't want to focus on a consequence or end goal, and instead believed that everyone should be treated as a means rather than an end. What is an example - ANSWER-For example, if a shopkeeper charges a certain amount for a chocolate bar, however knows he could charge much more to a child, who does not really know the concept of money as well. The shopkeeper could do this however does not as he knows it is not good will and that he would then not be seen in a good light by others for doing this action. What did Kant believe was good will? - ANSWER-He believed that a good will was when someone acted correctly to their 'duty', yet did not just complete their obligations because you want to do it or because it bodes well for you, but instead should complete your duty because it is your duty. What did Kant create from this - ANSWER-From this ethical theory, Kant created three principles which guide moral agents into making right decisions and these three ideas also help in analyzing the key role deontology has in ethical decision making.
