Guilford in the 1960s. -Structure of the Intellect; Joy Paul Guilford -identified 180 types of thinking, mostly divergent -top 2 most pertinent for creativity were 1. generate new information from existing information 2. transform knowledge into new patterns -developed a battery of 10 tests to measure divergence...addressing semantic and figural Discuss some differences between intelligence and creativity measures for indicating giftedness -IQ: convergent with one correct answer -Creativity- divergent with many possible solutions -intelligence and creativity are separate constructs -Guilford and Torrance developed tests to measure divergent thinking/creativity...these are still used today What are some aspects of creativity that measurement instruments can identify? they can measure fluency in ideation and divergence in thought What is an aspect of creativity that measurement instruments can not identify? they do not predict future creative behaviors of an individual identified as creative What are some problems with instruments used to measure creativity? 1. scientist think the problems are due to poor methodology...the studies were not over a long enough period of time, did not receive adequate statistical procedures, data from longitudinal studies were not well operationalized 2. personal definitions of creativity were not considered...the nature of their creativity, how to nurture it, indiviuals beliefs may greatly differ from the theories of experts in the field Describe Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking -focus on problem solving; "Thinking Creatively with Pictures" is a nonverbal test; "Thinking Creatively with Words" is a verbal test; -both test fluency, flexibility and originality -the nonverbal test also looks for elaboration -used from k- graduate school -timed Torrance says they are just as valid as IQ tests
