Quotes:
“His hair was of a lustrous black, his teeth of a pearly whiteness.”
(ch.5)
“His shrivelled complexion and straight black lips” (ch.5)
JUXTAPOSITION- his beautiful features give false hope to Victor as it
forms a horrid appearance. This reinforces how mankind’s attempts to
create life will always be unnatural and horrid.
“You, my creator, detest and spurn me.”
The Monster’s initial meeting with Frankenstein; he feels disgust towards
his creator for his ill treatment.
“These bleak skies I hail, for they are kinder to me than your
fellow beings”
ROMANTISICM- nature is kinder to the creature than human beings.
“I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend”
The Creature became corrupted by society’s hatred as he was good and
innocent like a child- TABULA RASA
“The barbarity of man”
Declarative sentence- human and mankind are cruel and evil inherently.
“I saw no cause for their unhappiness… I was deeply affected by
it”
The Creature began to learn and understand humans’ ways of interaction
through the DeLaceys (eloquence). He is caring and compassionate.

, “I am alone and miserable…man will not associate with me”
Theme of prejudice and dejection- human being’s outcast outsiders and
highlight the shallowness of mankind. We are the real devils in this world.
“I have murdered the lovely and the helpless; I have strangled
the innocent as they slept”
Highlights the Monster’s awareness of the cruelty of his actions. These
actions were an immoral form of revenge against humanity.
“I shall die… I shall no longer see the sun or stars, or feel the
winds play on my cheeks.”
CELESTIAL IMAGERY- he is extremely innocent and highly connected
with nature.
“One as deformed and horrible as myself will not deny herself to
me.”
Declarative/ Tone of certainty. The monster exclaims his want for a female
companion for comfort and warmth. He shows similarities of vulnerability
and warming as he yearns for a species to show love and affection.
“Remember, I shall be with you on your wedding night.”
After Victor denies and destroys the female companion, the Creature
plans to kill Elizabeth as revenge. They both share their possessive
attitudes over women.
CONTEXT
 He is denied of love and affection from his Creator, Victor, as he
faces extreme rejection and isolation.
 He faces prejudice and judgment from society as they disregard
him as a human being and is the cause of his demise. This mirrors
the children in society who are neglected during their youth, hence
becoming a social delinquent.

 PROMETHEUS MYTH- the creature symbolises the eagle who eats
at Prometheus’(Frankenstein) liver, perpetually, as punishment for
stealing forbidden fire from Zeus(God).
 The creature is the result of Victor’s selfish ambition.

 PARADISE LOST- a parallel to Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ as the
Creature now sees himself as the fallen angel of Satan due to God’s
banishment.
 The monster remorsefully recognises his actions to that of a devil
when really it is Frankenstein who is the true antagonist and Devil.
