Sedation (Minimal) Anxiolysis - Answer-This policy is intended to support the safe care of pts that are prescribed and receive drugs for the purpose of anyiolysis prior to or during diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures What is new is that physicians are not credentialed specifically for minimal sedation Anxiolytic Medications - Answer-A drug- induced state during which pts respond normally to verbal commands Anxiolytic Medications - Answer-Drugs that may be administered in doses appropriate for treatment of pain or anxiety (the intention is not sedation). Anxiolytic medications are used for diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures Sedation (Moderate) - Answer-Moderate sedation is a drug-induced depression of conciousness during which pts respond purposefully to verbal commands, either alone or accompanied by ligh tactile stimulations No intervention are required to maintain a patent airway spontaneous ventilation is adequate Specific MD credentialing is necessary Minimal Qualifications for Any Personnel Who Participate in Sedation - Answer-Understand the principles of oxygen delivery, transport and uptake, respiratory physiology, and use of oxygen delivery devices Knowledge and understanding of the pharm of the sedation and rescue medications Ability to draw up and administer sedating and rescue medicationsAbility to recognize a compromised airway Competency to monitor, intervene and assist in the management of complications and institute appropriate interventions in compliance with orders or protocols Competency in vital sign monitoring and assessing LOC Cerified in BLS if assisting with minimal or moderate sedation procedures A person certified in ACLS must be immediately avaible during moderate sedation procedures Certified in ACLS if assisting in DEEP sedation procedures Certified in PALS if assisting with peds moderate sedation procedures Key Principles of Sedation - Answer-Provide adequate sedation while maintaining cardiac and respiratory function Relieve anxiety, enhance pt cooperation Provide relief from pain and other noxious stimuli Duties of Personnel with Moderate Sedation - Answer-Personnel must be dedicated to the following responsibilities during moderate sedation At least one qualified personnel must be present during every procedural sedation A qualified personnel (according to their scope of practice) must assess the pt care requirements before, during and after sedation as defined in the policiesMust monitor VS including BP, HR, RR, O2 sats, level of pain and cardiac rhythm (when monitoring is required) Must monitor the pts LOC May draw up and administer the med for sedation if prescribed by and delegated from a physician or LIP who is immediately available The qualified personnel who is desginated to patient monitoring during the procedure must not leave the pt unattended Sedation - Answer-Sedation is a continuum. Therefore, it is not always possible to predict how an individual pt receiving sedation will respond
