BIOS-255 Week 6 Discussion: Respiratory Anatomy – Option A
BIOS-255 Week 6 Discussion: Respiratory Anatomy – Option A Option A: Describe the anatomy and histology of the respiratory system and how each of the functions are related. The Respiratory Sys tems main function is to filter air as it is breathed from external elements. The airways maintain homeostasis by monitoring pathogen entrance and preventing inflammation. The main organs are the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs. The respiratory system can be divided into a conducting portion and respiratory portion. From the nasal cavity to the bronchi, it is lined by pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium. The bronchioles are lined by simple columnar to the cuboidal epithelium, and the alveoli possess a lining of thin squamous epithelium that allows for gas exchange (Kia'i & Bajaj, 2022). The conducting portion includes the nose, trachea, bronchioles, and bronchi. This portion is where air moves into the body and as it is inhaled it filters for pathogens, allergens, and anything that may cause inflammation. The respiratory portion is where gas-exchange of the lungs occur. Alveoli are lined with simple squamous epithelium allowing for easy diffusion of O2 and CO2 (Kia'i & Bajaj, 2022).
