Terms chapter 1

Organizational behaviour = a field of study that investigates the impact individual,
groups and structure have on behaviour within organizations, as purpose to applying
such knowledge toward improving an organization’s effectiveness.

Organizational behaviour = a study what people do in an organization and the wat
their behaviour effects the organization’s performance.

Organisations = social entities that are goal oriented, inextricably linked to their
environment and employing deliberately designed and coordinated activities and
approaches to achieve their objectives.

Systematic study = looking at relationships, trying to attribute causes and effects,
and drawing conclusions based on scientific evidence.

Evidence-based management = EDM = basing managerial decisions on the best
available scientific evidence.

Intuition = instinctive feeling not necessarily supported by research.

Psychology = science that seeks to measure, explain, sometimes change the
behaviour of humans.

Social psychology = area of psychology that blends concepts from psychology &
sociology to focus on the influence of people on one another.

Sociology = study of people in relation to their social environment/culture.

Anthropology = study of societies to learn about human beings and their activities.

Contingency variables = situational factors/variables that moderate the relationship
between 2 or more variables.

Workforce diversity = the concept that organisations are becoming more
heterogeneous in terms of gender, age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and other
characteristics.

Ethical dilemmas and choices = situations in which individuals are required to define
right and wrong product.

Model = abstraction of reality (simplified representation of a real-world
phenomenon).

Attitudes = evaluative statements/judgements concerning objects, people or events.

Stress = unpleasant psychological process that occurs in response to environmental
pressures.
