_ Managers are individuals who achieve goals through other people.
_ Roles of managers:
Planning: defining goals, setting strategies, developing plans.
Organizing: assigning tasks to specific group or people.
Controlling: monitoring activities.
Leading: motivating employees, resolving conflicts.
2. Henry Mintzberg identified managerial roles that fit into the three specific categories
what are each of these roles? What do they mean?
_ Mintzberg’s categories:
Interpersonal
o Figurehead: mascot of the team
o Leader: motivate and direct employees
o Liaison: maintain external network
Informational
o Monitor: receives wide variety of internal and external information
o Disseminator: transmits received information to organization’s members
o Spokesperson: transmits specific internal info to external info
Decisional
o Entrepreneur: searching for opportunities and initiates projects
o Disturbance handler: take action when company facing unexpected
disturbances
o Resource allocator: make/approve significant decisions
o Negotiator: dealing with firms’ major negotiation

The avg manager has an even mix of traditional, HR, communication, and networking. A
successful manager focuses on networking. Successful managers give almost the opposite
emphases to traditional management, communication, human resource management, and
networking as do effective managers.

Motivating and leading people and making collaborative decisions online require
different techniques than when individuals are physically present in a single location.

8. What is Workforce diversity? Why is it important?
Workforce diversity is the bringing together of a variety of people to one workplace. This
workplace would be comprised of people with a wide range of experiences, backgrounds and
characteristics.
