Develop a consistent process to translate a question into an algebraic
expression. Almost any word problem can be broken down into four
steps. For a given question:

1. Identify the independent (given) variables
2. Identify the dependent variables
3. Construct the relationship between the variables
4. Solve or compute the expression in order to find the answer

A car drives for half an hour 50 miles per hour and for
15 minutes 100 miles per hour. How many miles did the car travel?

(Gegeven variabele) (Gegeven variabele) (Gegeven variabele)
Tijd2 Snelheid2 Afstand

Afstand = ( Snelheid1 x Tijd1 ) + ( Snelheid2 x Tijd2 )

Afstand = ( 50 x 0,5 ) + ( 100 x 0,25 )

= 50 miles
