Question text
Read the following article very carefully and respond to the questions that follow: Looking
across the azure expanse of Katse Dam, I noticed the water taxi churning along on the far
embankment. Suddenly, I wonder why Noah only took the animals into the ark when the
floods came. What about the poor plants that were submerged for more than a month? I’m
convinced that if Moeketsi Mokati had been on board, he’d have taken the plants too. _As the
first chill of the approaching winter stabs us, I follow Mokati, the local field operations

, manager of the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) into his pride and joy:
the new Katse botanical garden. _Perched on the high ground above the main reservoir of the
Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) in Katse village, this new project asset covers
17ha that spills down into the valley to the water’s edge. It features a diversity of plant
material, including that which was gathered from the basin before inundation of Malibamatso
and Bokong river valleys started. _Mokati refers to this as “the first alpine garden in Southern
Africa”, but it is probably more correct to call it the first “malotine” garden, seeing that the
plants are from Maloti, not the Alps._“We have more than 10 000 plants here, representing
more than 500 species”, says Mokati. Most of the plants are currently grown under controlled
conditions and protected from the elements by shade cloth. “We have only utilised 8ha for
actual replanting to date, but we’re expanding steadily”. _He points out that the short growth
season at high altitude restricts rapid expansion of the garden. However, neither the short
growth season nor the two vicious hailstorms in early summer deterred him from organising
the first (malotine) flower show this year. “This will be an annual event and, judging from
this year’s response and success, should become a major event on the botanical calendar”,
Mokati says. _Initially, this project aimed merely at rescuing plant material from the dam
basin, but now the focus has widened to recreating the diversity of Lesotho’s indigenous
plants in an accessible setting. _Plants are divided into three broad categories: rare and
endangered, medicinal and utility. The rare and endangered plants will be propagated here
and re-introduced to areas where they were endemic. _These plants will also be sold at the
botanical garden, to discourage the depletion of those occurring naturally. LHDA has already
achieved considerable success in protecting the threatened Spiral Aloe (Aloe Polyphylla).
_For Mokati, the most exciting aspect is cutting medicinal plants in close co-operation with
traditional healers. Trials are underway to study the best technique for propagating these
plants that play a significant role in Sotho culture. Specific plants are used for ritual
cleansing, healing and creating general well-being, while others are used in the installation
rites of chiefs or for divining, and during initiation ceremonies. _Extract from an article: The
plant Noah – The Katse Dam has provided an opportunity for a ground-breaking botanical
project, Earth Year: The essential environmental guide, Volume 2 Edition 23, 2001.
“Suddenly, I wonder why Noah only took the animals into the ark when the floods came.
What about the poor plants that were submerged for more than a month? I’m convinced that
if Moeketsi Mokati had been on board, he’d have taken the plants too”. This statement
suggests that, according to the writer, Moeketsi Mokati possesses the following core value(s)
linked to sustainable development.

a.
Human beings are part of nature and less dependent on it.

b.
Every life form should be treated with respect and must be protected from harm.

c.
Every life form should be treated with respect as long as it benefits humans.

d.
Plants are part of nature and, thus, do not depend on human beings for protection.
