It is the maintenance that holds information as it is linking to long term memory. Working memory is actively making connections between long term memory and perceptual information (Gazzaniga, Ivry, Mangun, 2019).This is possible because of the prefrontal cortex, working memory is what is connecting the prefrontal cortex’s current perception and long term memories that are relevant to a certain task or goal in learning (Gazzaniga, Ivry, Mangun, 2019). Working memory is also the process that holds a visual stimulus in our mind as we are actively trying to memorize or learn a new thing. (Gazzaniga, Ivry, Mangun, 2019). Working memory is important for reasoning and the guidance of decision-making and behavior. “Working memory” is crucial for learning and refers to the ability to hold and manipulate information mentally over short periods of time. Working memory is a process and is different than rote memory, which involves passively memorizing static information. Working memory relates to learning and intelligance in the fact that we use the experiances we have been through to learn from our mistakes and determine who it is best and most profitible to form relationships with. Let me expound on this by saying that relationships can be of any sort... personal, friendly, romantically, spiritual, business, etc. Any sort of relationship that will profit the individual and his endeavors in some form or fashion and save him from hardship, heartbreak, injury and death is adaptive and beneficial to both the individual and his generation. Working memory is strongly correlated with intelligence in children and adults. When people perform better on a working memory task, they also tend to perform better on an intelligence task.
