PSY-402 Topic 4 DQ 1
PSY-402 Topic 4 DQ 1 Compare and contrast early and late selection models of attention, and provide examples of each. Class, The models of attention refer to the theories surrounding how much of what is going on around an individual is perceived consciously when their attention is focused elsewhere (Gazzaniga, Ivry, Mangun, 2013). The early models held that the perceptual system did not process information equally and could, before an awareness occurs, be rid of any irrelevant information and thereby only allow the most important of information to break through into conscious awareness ( Gazzaniga, Ivry, Mangun, 2013). However, the late models found a more conscious awareness occurs in order for a person to decide whether or not to grant incoming thoughts more of their attention or not. An example of this is when you are in a busy area full of people, but you hear you name being called. Based on the early models, you should not even have an option to register this information, but the late models found unattended information was able to reach higher stages of analysis (Gazzaniga, Ivry, Mangun, 2013).
