Lawful change in developmental psychology refers to change that is abrupt or uneven and follows a sequence with distinct stages. Emmy Werner followed 698 children that were born on the island of Kauai at birth, to age 18, to age 32 (longitudinal study). Out of the 200 high risk children, 2/3 of them became delinquents, and 1/3 of them turned out fine. This study demonstrated the idea of lawful change because many of the children grew up to be delinquents because they did not receive the care and support needed to "pass" each stage.
