, Question 1

One of the practicaal competences for the educator in the pastoraal roale is to show an appreciation
of and respect for peopale with diferent vaalues, bealiefs practices and cualtures. Demonstrate your
competence in terms of cualturaal diversity by responding to the foalalowing:

1. Define the concept cualturaal diversity 5)r
Cultural diversity refers to a mixture of cultures represented in a region, area, or natonn In
South Africa, we have a rich cultural diversity where people with diferent cultural
backgrounds are encouraged to express their cultural identtes and everyone is expected to
respect each other’s cultural identtyn Cultural identty can be expressed in a person’s
clothing, their behaviour and even their dialectn Sometmes, culture is linked to a person’s
ethnicity, but it can also be linked to the area they live inn Diferent cultures may have
diferent dialects, or even diferent languages, religions and traditonsn For example, people
with a Greek heritage may celebrate their Greek culture, eat Greek food and practce Greek
traditons here in South African
2. Distinguish between macro cualture and micro cualture. Ialalustrate your answer with practicaal
exampales from your schooal environment 510r
Many micro cultures exist within one larger macro culturen The macro culture is ofen the
dominant culture of a region, area or naton and upholds certain societal views, behaviours
and valuesn A micro culture within a macro culture may have some of the same values etcn as
the macro culture it is within, but it will also have its own unique values, views, traditons
etcn
For example, in the School environment, the school itself can be seen as a micro culture
within the macro culture of South African culturen It upholds the values and traditons of the
dominant culture (South African culture), but also has some of its own unique traditonsn For
example, one school may have assembly everyday while another may have assemblies only
on Mondayn
Within the school, the school itself could be seen as the macro culture, with the code of
conduct guiding its values, traditons etcn, and a classroom may have its own micro culture
where they uphold the values and rules of the school (the code of conduct) but also handle
behavioural discipline in a way that is unique to that classroomn For example, the teacher
might ring a small bell to tell the children to be quietn
