size up the scene - ANSWER--use you senses to check for hazards that could present danger to you or the victim -use appropriate PPE -determine the number of victims -determine the nature of the illness or what caused the injury -look for life-threatening conditions -determine if additional resources are needed primary assessment - ANSWER--determine if the victim has a life-threatening condition, if so call 911 -check for responsiveness -open the airway -check for breathing and pulse for at least 5 seconds, but no longer than 10 seconds -look listen and feel for breath - check for pulse (adult/child: carotid pulse in neck, infant: brachial pulse in arm) -if victim has drowned give 2 initial ventilations recovery positions - ANSWER--if victim is unresponsive, but is breathing and has a pulse place the victim in a side lying recovery position -if head or neck injury is suspected leave the victim face up unless airway becomes blocked by fluid or vomit or you are alone and need to leave the victim when should you g
