The Role of Peer Support in Recovery
What is recovery? (SAMHSA working def., 2012) a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential. Recovery is (def. Connecticut dept of MH & Addictions services) is what people experience themselves as they become empowered to manage their mental illness &/or substance use disorder in a manner that allows them to achieve a meaningful life & a positive sense of belonging in their community. Aspects of recovery, (SAMHSA- 4 major dimensions that support recovery.) 1. Health 2. Home 3. Purpose 4. Community Health as an aspect of recovery Managing one's disease(s) as well as living in a physically & emotionally heathy way. Home as an aspect of recovery A stable & safe place to live. Purpose as an aspect of recovery Meaningful daily activities, such as a job, school, volunteerism, family caretaking, or creative endeavors, and the independence, income and resources to participate in society. Community as an aspect of recovery Relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love, and hope. Guiding Principles of Recovery 1. emerges from hope 2. person-driven 3. occurs via many pathways 4. holistic 5. supported by peers and allies 6. supported through relationship & social networks 7. culturally-based & influenced 8. based on respect 9. supported by addressing trauma 10. involves individual, family, & community strengths & responsibilites
