P7 – Describe the roles, responsibilites and career pathways of three health or social
care workers
In this assignment, I will be describing the roles, responsibilites and career pathways of three health or social care
workers. The health or social care workers I will be discussing are clinical psychologists, midwives and primary school
teachers.

Clinical psychologists
 Roles; The role of a clinical psychologist is to treat people who have mental illnesses such as anxiety,
depression, eatng disorders, personality disorders, PTSD etc. They may also work with people who are going
through a stressful tme in their lives and need someone to talk about it with. A clinical psychologist will help
a patent understand their problems and will work with them to solve them using various methods. Such as
one-to-one discussions, group discussions, or CBT. Clinical psychologists cannot prescribe medicaton,
however, they can send the patent to a psychiatrist who has a medical degree and can prescribe medicaton
if they believe the patent needs it.
 Responsibilites; A clinical psychologist will have many responsibilites. One responsibility is to identfy any
emotonal, behavioural or psychological issues that the patent has. They will then give the patent a
diagnosis and come up with a treatment plan for the patent. The client will set their own goals to overcome
their issues with the help of the clinical psychologist, they will then work together to reach those goals.
Lastly, the clinical psychologist will regularly meet the patent for sessions and monitor their progress.
 Career pathway; Firstly, in order to become a clinical psychologist an individual will require a DBS as they
will be working with vulnerable people. Next, they will need fve GCSE'ss A-C including E'nglish, maths and
sometmes science. They will then require three A-Levels A-C, or a BTE'C course that is equivalent to three A-
Levels such as a Level 3. They will need to go into further educaton at university and get a degree in
psychology. Furthermore, work experience will be required. This can be done as a youth support worker,
through community service volunteering, working with people with disabilites or learning difcultes,
working on mental health wards, working with the NHS, or working with the elderly. Lastly, afer the
individual graduates they will need to be registered with HCPC and BPS.

Midwives
 Roles; The role of a midwife is to work with women during their pregnancy, labour, and the postpartum
period when the woman and her partner are getng used to being a parent. They provide the necessary
support, advice and care for women during these periods. Midwives also care for new born babies and
infants. They help women and babies through clinical examinatons, screening tests, health advice, parent
educaton, and working with parents who did not have a healthy baby or whoss baby died.
 Responsibilites; A midwife will have many responsibilites. One responsibility is to provide the parents with
informaton and advice for looking afer the baby. She will also have to look afer the mother during labour
and monitor the foetus to ensure that labour is going correctly, she will then be responsible for examining
and caring for the baby when it is born. However, there are also tmes when the pregnancy or labour go
wrong, or when the baby has difcultes when born. The midwife will have to know what to do in these
situatons. For example, she will have to be able to recognise the warning signs of abnormality in the mother
or baby which will have to be examined by a doctor, or she may have to advise the mother if her pregnancy
is at risk.
 Career pathway; Firstly, in order to become a midwife an individual will require a DBS as they will be
working with vulnerable people. The qualifcatons needed to become a midwife are fve GCSE'ss with A-C
grades including maths and E'nglish, two A-Levels with A-C grades, or a BTE'C course which is equivalent to
two A-Levels such as a Level 3. Next, they will have to study at university and get a degree in midwifery.
