This report will cover concepts of leadership and management with
consideration for the associated issues within mathematics. Lowe (2019,
p.13) defines leadership as ‘about having an idea of what you want and
how to get it’ and management as ‘about the processes, structures and
procedures that are needed to make things happen’. Within this report
theory and practice, management and leadership roles including the
responsibilities of these roles will be explored and how they underpin the
strategic direction and development and effective practice within
mathematics, raising the standards of learning and teaching to deliver a
successful mathematics curriculum in schools. This will also include how
to support the children in the subject as well as the teachers in developing
an enriching curriculum for the subject and finding ways to look forward
after developing a change.
Leading a subject is important responsibility for these in leadership,
ensuring that they are providing an enriching and information rich
curriculum that is successful. An effective leader is someone who is self-
aware, ‘this is the cornerstone that all the other qualities will hang off’
(Paramour, 2018, p.36), they must be someone who can be reflective on
themselves to ensure they set the standard to lead others to help them to
develop themselves. A leader leading mathematics will have the
responsibility to make key decisions in the scheme of work, marking
policy, resources, assessment including ensuring teachers are confident in
delivering mathematics within the classroom as well as delivering
continuous professional development (CPD) where appropriate and
needed. They will make sure to provide ‘vision, direction and support
