 Question 1

1. “Learner support materials have to be carefully selected by the teacher for use in a lesson.”
Write an essay in which you critically discuss this statement.

Introduction
Learner support materials have to be carefully selected by the teacher for use in a lesson . As a Life
Skills teacher, you can use various teaching tools to supplement the learning materials you use in
your classroom. A lot of material is available without cost. For instance, pictures are available in a
multitude of magazines. Other printed materials, such as film-strips and other audio-visual materials,
are available on the internet. Once you get the material, you must examine it carefully before using it
with your learners. Some items will turn out to be useless and others so overladen with bias that they
are impossible to use.

Visual teaching support materials are not always chosen wisely or used effectively. When well used,
these materials can be a medium for awakening thoughts and interest. However, when poorly used, it
can be a source of less excitement. Pictures, charts, flannel boards, and similar displays make the
difference between learners’ understanding and not understanding. Visual material can be an
excellent base for building interesting, high order learning activities (discussion, inquiry, research
activities) that can improve critical thinking and other higher mental processes. The effectiveness of
these materials depends on the willingness of a teacher to enhance his/her teaching.

The effective teacher will make the inquiry about audio-visual materials and expend the effort
needed to implement them well for the benefit of the class. Care must be taken in the selection of an
audio-visual material for use in the classroom. A poor selection and inappropriate material can turn
what was supposed to be an excellent lesson into a disappointing failure. A material that projects
unclear sound, which presents obscure or shaky images or that is too profound will certainly not be
met with a delighted response from the class. The same applies to the material that is too difficult to
present or takes too long to set up ‒ it will dampen the enthusiasm of a class as quickly as a boring
lesson.

According to VanGundy (2005), to use audio-visual materials with maximum effectiveness will
usually require two types of preparation: psychological preparation and physical preparation. From
the psychological point, learners have to be prepared for the utilisation of the material and coached
on how best to profit from its presentation. Movie clips, for instance, will require that you spend
some time setting the scene by making the purpose of the activity clear, suggesting points to look for
and present problems to solve. From the physical point, preparation pertains to the machine to be
used, the equipment involved, and the arrangement of the classroom furniture will have to be
attended to.

Conclusion
As a result, you cannot expect the tool to do everything. You should, however, modify it to suit your
needs. For example, guiding the activity would entail pausing the tools and asking questions or
making comments that link what is shown in the audio-visual aid to the lesson. Before using the
material, teachers must become thoroughly acquainted with it. They should use the material as a
