Teaching IELTS Assignment – Listening and Speaking
2024(tefl level 5 I-to-i )

Analyse the information in the class summary. What are your learners’
strengths and weaknesses?
(max. 100 words)

As a group; these learners' combined strength lies in their mutual motivation to
migrate to englisHh speakinenglishg countries, either for employment or for education
purposes. Another strength that they are share is the skill for reading, with a majority of
thembeing high up on the band list, at a number 7 grade.
Their assumed weakness could be that each of them originate from different
countries; however, this can play to their advantage in the long run as the sharing of
culture could be an opportunity to build a sense of rapport.
In terms of skills; their weaknesses lie in the other three skills because they are in
need of more improvement within those areas.
Which two skills have you chosen to teach in this lesson? Why? (minimum 150
words)
For this lesson; I chose to focus on teaching the skills, speaking and writing to my
students. These skills are two of the lowest that students are performing in, so I
wanted to focus on them in order to raise their individual bands.
Another reason that I chose to focus on these skills is because while I was looking

,into difficulties that my students have in relation to learning English; I found that a
majority struggle with problems related to pronunciation and the written form of
English, as it differs from their L1s in some ways.

To give a bit more context, allow me to provide a few more examples. Take a Chen
for instance, while his L1 (Chinese) focuses on tone and a difference of pitch
regarding a particular word, English focuses on intonation in that it does not have a
specific tone for each word used.
Which lesson topic have you chosen? Why? (minimum 100 words)
I have chosen to focus on Health and Fitness because it has been a popular market
in the last few years. A mlarge majority of people are prioritizing their health, and
maintaining a balanced diet. For that reason, I chose to focus on health and fitness as
a lesson topic.
In order to be more specific though; I chose to look at exercise within this larger
group. My themes within this topic focus on the types of exercise, the idioms found
within the category of exercise, as well as the popular debate of whether cardio or
strength training are the better exercise. This last portion is something I saved until
the end of the lesson so that my students will have a essay topic for homework that
will cause them to dive in deeper to the world of health and fitness and be able to
create their own perspectives surrounding the field as a whole.
