Peak drawn 1 hour after start of inf. or IM inj. of the 3rd dose. Trough drawn 30 min. before next dose. Aminoglycosides side effects: -correct answer Esp. in older adults dehydrated pts., renal or hearing impairment; Nephrotoxicity - Ototoxicity, Neuromuscular blocking including resp. paralysis. CNS symptoms> headache, tremor, lethargy, numbness, seizures, blurred vision, rash or uticaria, GI upset, photosensitivity. Aminoglycosides contra or exteme caution: -correct answer Tinnitus, vertigo & high-frequency hearing loss - Reduced renal func. Dehydration - Pregnant or nursing women, infants or older adullts--hydrate well. Premedicate: with antiemetic, antihistamine, coricosteroid to decrease side effects Aminoglycosides interactions: -correct answer Penicillins can inactivate - diuretics increase toxicities, neuromuscular blockers increase paralysis. Antiemetics may mask symptoms of vestibular ototoxicity. Aminoglycosides Pt. Ed; -correct answer avoid direct exposure to sunlight Observation of I & O urine output Report side effects, esp. kidney or hearing problems, new pregnancy.
