REPORT ON THE ROLE AND SKILLS OF AN EVENT ORGANISER

1.0 TERMS OF REFERENCE

This is a report based upon my findings from researching the roles and skills of an event
organiser in relation to a Bridal Show in Harrogate.

2.0 PROCEDURE
For this report to have been made complete, I had to take the following procedures:
2.1 Study the concept of roles and skills of an event organiser.
2.2 Go to the Harrogate Bridal Show in order to research the event in actuality.
2.3 Reflect upon what had been experienced at the Harrogate Bridal Show and makes
links with what I have been studying.
3.0 FINDINGS
3.1 Describe the skills required of an event organiser
There are certain skills an individual must hold in order to be a successful event organiser.
One of these skills is communication and interpersonal skills which is extremely important
for an event organiser if he/she wants an event to succeed. Communication could be about the
size of the venue or queries that the event attendees may have. The interpersonal skills can
also have a massive effect on how successful the event can turn out to become. For instance,
if you are communicating regularly, you will be aware of what is happening at the event at all
times and won't become concerned of not knowing what is happening. Also, if you are
listening to others recommendations and taking them into account, these recommendations
may help you think about doing something in the event that you might have missed or not
thought about yourself Furthermore, asking for assistance when you really need it will lead to
a successful event as it can be stressful and you could possibly have a higher chance of things
going wrong if you pile everything up for yourself to do. In the bridal event in which I visited
and analysed, the event organiser was going around the venue every few minutes asking staff
quick questions such as 'if everything was okay' and also asking attendees how they were
finding the event in order to gain feedback. Another skill required of an event organiser is
time management. One of the roles of an event organiser is to multi-task and you cannot
multi-task efficiently if you don't also have good time management skills. Having good time
management skills would mean that you know what takes high priority so that you know
what to focus on the most and not waste time doing things that would be of little or no
relevance to the event. Poor time management would be not being organised by carrying out
things that are a waste of time instead of doing something helpful to the event. In the bridal
event I visited, I found that there was a certain schedule that staff were strictly set to follow
by the event organiser to ensure everything happened at exact planned times. Another skill
required of an event organiser would be problem solving which is a useful skill to help the
