Learning aim, A: Examine principles, values and skills which underpin
meeting the care and support needs of individuals.
A.P1-Explain the importance of promoting equality and diversity for individuals
with different needs.
According to Billingham et. al (2016) equality, diversity and anti-discrimination
policies are important for the protection of the individual rights of service
providers and service recipients in the health and social care sector. Equality,
diversity and anti-discrimination practices are managed in order to provide
quality service to service users and to protect them from bullying. The equality
Act of 2010 and the Human Rights Act of 1998 guarantee the rights of
individuals. Equality is about ensuring that every individual has an equal
opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents. According to textbook
equality in the health and social care sector means everyone having equal
access to the services they need, that is, receiving a service of equal quality
that meets their personal needs, no matter where they live or how they live
their lives. When dealing with others, it is very important to act by taking
people’s different beliefs into account. Service providers must accept the
individual’s personal beliefs, even if they do not share them. If a person’s
religious beliefs mean they can only eat certain foods (such as Muslim people
do not eat pork) or must pray at a certain time. If a suitable environment is not
provided for them to fulfil the requirements of their beliefs, the service user
will feel sand and bad, which negatively affects the care. Advantage of equality
is making sure that the services provided to people are fair and accessible to
everyone.
Diversity means a range of differences. It is important to value diversity and to
respect other people’s cultures, beliefs and appearances. According to
Buckinghamshire Council (2023), diversity means appreciating differences
among people and treating people with respect for their values, beliefs,
cultures and lifestyles. If you refuse to respect diversity, you will have difficulty
communicating with them and therefore will not be able to learn about them.
People’s age, gender, disability or religious beliefs should be respected, and
diversity should be accepted. It is a legal obligation to respect and value all
individuals.

,Discrimination is prejudiced attitudes and behaviours against a person or a
group because of a person’s age, gender, race, origin, religious belief, sexuality,

health, social class or disability. Discrimination in the healthcare setting can be
defined as negative actions or lack of consideration given to an individual or
group that occurs because of a preconceived and unjustified opinion. There are
four different forms of discrimination. The first is unfair discrimination, where
one person is treated unfairly compared to another. Another method of
discrimination is direct discrimination, where one person directly commits a
rude act or word against another. Indirect discrimination, on the other hand, is
difficult to prove because it is done in a jokey way. Finally, affirmative action is
deciding in favour of a person because there is something different about
them. Equality and diversity form the basis of health and social care. Well-
managed equality and diversity practices ensure that the services provided are
fair. Treating service users equally and respectfully, accepting diversity without
discrimination ensures a better service.
Valerie is an obese teenage girl. And that’s why she was bullied. For this
reason, they may be afraid of experiencing discrimination. In Valerie’s case,
diversity should be respected, treated equally and not discriminated against. In
the health and social care sector, every individual is equal, so it is out of
question for her to be judged for her appearance. In another case, Aisha is an
82-year-old single woman. Since she is a lonely old patient, she should be
treated equally and should not be discriminated against. Equality is a very
important issue for Valerie and Aisha. Equality, diversity and anti-
discrimination procedures ensure that the rights of these individuals are
protected and that they are safe while receiving health and social care. These
are important principles for providing quality care to individuals and
understanding their needs.

A.M1- Analyse the impact of preventing discrimination for individuals with
different needs.
According to Billingham et. al (2016) discrimination can cause many problems.
For example, depression, anxiety, loss of self-confidence, alienation from social
life, fear, injury, death, stress and many other mental and physical negativities
can cause. In some cases, this can lead to malpractice and abuse, putting

, individuals at risk of significant harm. Care staff must understand the
importance of avoiding discriminatory language and behaviour at work.
Because this situation makes it difficult for the care personnel to understand
the patient and provide the necessary assistance.
Anti-discriminatory practice is at the core of social work values. It is an
approach that seeks to reduce, undermine or eliminate discrimination and
oppression and remove the barriers that prevent people from accessing
services. Practising against discrimination has many benefits for health and
social care. For example, in health and social care, accepting diversity and
treating everyone equally will ensure that people receive the necessary
treatment and feel better. In Britain, the people are very diverse, and in this
society, which has different religions, languages, races and cultures from many
ethnic groups, it is vital to prevent discrimination, especially in the health and
social life sector. Respecting patients' beliefs and lifestyles, appearance or
illness is the first thing a healthcare professional should do. Courtesy and
understanding enable positive communication between the patient and staff,
and in this way, it becomes easier to administer treatment. Preventing
discrimination provides strong communication with people and helps them
gain self-confidence. For example, talking to someone who does not speak
English through a translator makes them feel safer, or communicating with a
deaf person using sign language is an act that will prevent discrimination, and
by this way, they will have equal rights by communicating.
The case of Valerie clearly demonstrates the impact of discrimination on the
individual. Valerie is obese. A young girl who has been discriminated against by
young people because of her being. This affected her self-confidence and made
him afraid. Being discriminated against negatively affects the self-confidence of
the individual, and for this reason, the individual becomes socially and
emotionally negative.
A.D1- Evaluate the success of promoting anti-discriminatory practice for
specific individuals with different needs.
According to Billingham et. al (2016) anti-discriminatory practice is at the core
of social work values. It is an approach that seeks to reduce, undermine or
eliminate discrimination and oppression and remove the barriers that prevent
people from accessing services. Preventing discrimination and accepting
diversity and treating everyone equally is a very important issue in health and
social care. Respecting the illnesses, appearance, beliefs, religion, language and
