Schools are not required to provide unofficial copies of records unless, it's a great distance, impossible for the parents or eligible student to get there. Schools may charge for a copy. If individual staff or faculty members need to be informed of a student's condition, that student requires an ECP (emergency care plan) listing symptoms to be alert for and the required response to those symptoms When can schools share health information with other agencies within their state? 1) Abuse or neglect 2) Certain reportable diseases that pose an imminent threat (diseases on the 72 hour list do not pose imminent danger so consent must be obtained first 3) Concern that a student may hurt himself or others 4) De-identified data- health-related data that doesn't contain the student's identification or make it readily traceable How many days does a school have before they have to honor the FERPA request? Schools must honor your request within 45 days of receiving the request. Parents can inspect and review the records, but schools are not obligated to provide copies unless they live too far away or unable to get to the school. What is included in directory information? Name, address, DOB, POB, dates of attendance, participation in sports and activities, weight and height of members of athletic teams, degrees, honors, and awards, and the most recent school attended What schools are not included under FERPA? Parochial and private schools do not receive federal funding so they are not subject to FERPA What are some issues FERPA is not allowed to challenge?
