The word derived from ‘epidemics’ and from
Greek words “epi”= on or upon; “demos” = the
common people; “logos“= study
• Epidemiology is the study of:
i) Something that afflicts the population
ii) Distribution of disease and its determinants in
human populations in order to control health
problems
, iii) Disease occurrence (frequency, distribution,
determinants) in human populations and
application of that knowledge to control
health problems
iv) Distribution and determinants of health
related states or events in specified human
populations and the application of this study
to control of health problems.
