Chapter 1: Introduction to Social Psychology

Psychology = scientific study of the mind
● The behavior you show is mostly determined by the things in your mind
● Goal: formulate general statements about psychological processes.

→ Social psychology = the scientific study of how people think about, influence, and relate to one another
(social relations, groups and identities)
● Social psychology deals with both ‘within skins’ issues (thinking, emotions, attitudes) and
‘between skins’ issues (interaction, communication). Social psychologists investigate how
and why behavior has occurred.
● People are influenced by the actual (explicit) or imagined (implicit) presence of others.
