This teacher’s manual contains questions and answers to accompany the Second Edition of the
book Understanding Solid State Physics by Sharon Ann Holgate, published in 2021. It
contains not only the questions provided in the book, but also additional ones for students to
try and of course the solutions to all these problems.
Since only a selection of these questions is found in the book, the final section of this manual
lists all the questions in a format that may be easily photocopied for distribution to students. In
addition the questions have also been hosted as a PDF on the book’s companion website at
https://routledgetextbooks.com/textbooks/_author/holgate
The companion website also contains additional supplementary material, including handouts
of QR code links to further reading grouped by the chapters they relate to, a selection of light-
hearted video quiz questions for students to test their knowledge of solid state physics, a video
