THE PERITONEUM
Lining abdominal cavity and covering the anterior surface of some organs on the posterior
abdominal wall – Parietal Peritoneum
It is continuous with the Visceral Peritoneum that covers the abdominal viscera – the gut
Peritoneal cavity - potential space containing a small amount of serous fluid – allows
movement
Intraperitoneal = Within the peritoneal cavity
Retroperitioneal = Having to do with the area outside or behind the peritoneum, e.g.
organs found on the posterior abdominal wall (aorta, kidneys, inferior vena cava)
Gut tube development
Foregut
Stomach, 1st part duodenum, liver, pancreas, spleen
- COELIAC TRUNK
Midgut
Caudal duodenum, small and large intestine up to splenic flexure Hissue)
- SUPERIOR MESENTERIC ARTERY
Hindgut
Splenic flexure, descending, sigmoid colon, rectum, upper anal canal
- INFERIOR MESENTERIC ARTERY
Foregut development
The primitive gut tube is formed from the endoderm.
The dorsal mesentery is where the gut tube becomes suspended.
The stomach begins as a cylindrical tube
It is invested within the dorsal and ventral mesogastrium
The liver develops in the ventral mesogastrium and as it enlarges
it moves towards the right
The spleen develops within the dorsal mesogastrium and it moves
towards the left with eth stomach
