D2 Justify the strategies and techniques used to overcome ethical issues and challenges experienced by individuals with
different needs when planning and providing care
In this assignment I will be justifying the strategies and techniques used to overcome ethical issues and
challenges experienced by Valarie and Tremaine when planning and providing care. Valarie has
motivational challenged as well as awareness and knowledge challenges. She has awareness and
knowledge challenges as Valarie doesn’t feel the need to lose weight despite being overweight which
shows she is unaware of the health risks that come with being overweight such as (Health effects of
overweight and obesity 2022) Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and risk of stroke. She also has
motivational challenges as she is currently relying on universal funds to support her as she has no job,
meaning she isn't dependant on herself. Some ethical issues Valarie may face are managing conflict as
Valarie won't know how to socialise due to not having a job, so if she was to be placed in a confrontation
she wouldn’t know how to act. Another ethical issue Valarie may face is minimizing the risk but
promoting the individual's choice as she doesn’t want to lose weight and that’s her choice however it
doesn’t minimize the risks that she can get from being overweight, Tremaine has communication
challenges as well as acceptance and belief challenges. This is because of him not being able to
communicate properly due to his autism and his acceptance and belief challenges are because of
Tremaine not believing his leg is injured as he doesn’t want the cast on.
Valarie
Managing conflict is one of the ethical issues Valarie could face. (Conflict management 2023) Conflict
Management is the use of processes, tools, and skills to find creative and respectful ways to manage
disagreements and disputes This would be an issue for Valarie as she wouldn’t know how to deal with
confrontation as she is isolated most times from not having a job. A strategy that would help her
overcome this is, computer aided systems. This would help Valarie as computer aided systems are
online support systems which help supply specific information. The online support system is virtual
meaning Valarie won't get into a confrontation if she was to talk about her weight. This would have a
positive impact on Valarie as she may feel judged if she was in person as it can lead to a confrontation
and her self-esteem lowering, however on the computer aided system she wouldn’t feel judged.
Minimising risk but promoting individual choice and independence is another ethical issue which Valarie
could face. This is due to her not wanting to lose weight which in health and social care settings, service
cares must promote the individual's choice as it boosts there independence however it doesn’t minimize
the risks that are bound to happen if her weight remains overweight. A strategy which can help
overcome this challenge is training course. Valarie can go to a training course which can help her in
losing weight whilst also changing her mindset, this will be beneficial for Valarie as her thoughts of not
wanting to lose weight, will change as they will be able to tell her the risks of being overweight but in a
way which won't discourage her. This is a positive impact for Valarie as she would be able to lose weight
on her own choice which doesn’t make her lose her independence and she is also minimizing risk

One stragety that can help overcome Valarie and her needs is education information material challenge.
This would help overcome for Valarie is the awareness of her obesity. (Educational Materials for
Medicines 2023). Example of education material directed at individuals can be leaflets, posters,
PowerPoints and PDFS. This is because as of right now Valarie doesn’t feel the need to lose weight,
however with the education information material she would maybe change her mind after seeing the
posters that state all the health factors and risks that come with being her size. The leaflets are also
easily accessible and free of charge so Valarie would be increasing her knowledge for free, and it would
be accessible for Valarie to receive. Inside the leaflets could include the health risks as well as easy ways
to lose weight which Valarie can read in private. This is a positive impact for Valarie as reading it in
private would save her from any embarrassment she’d get from being unaware for so long.
Another strategy that will help Valarie overcome her needs such as communication challenges would be
clinical audits. This is because Valarie will be able to discuss her practice and care given with her support
team and be able to make decisions for herself. This will then lead to her improving her communication
skills as she has a chance to say what she wants in her own care and whatever she feels comfortable In.
For example, Valarie can make the decision of not wanting to lose weight by going to the gym but by
taking tablets for weight loss, this can then be discussed amongst her and her support team. This would
have a positive impact on Valarie as she would feel happy that there is a support system around her and
would feel confident as she is making the decisions for herself.
One last strategy that will help Valarie overcome her needs such as motivational challenges is patient
mediated strategies. This is because of Valarie's opinion that she doesn’t feel the need to lose weight
however with the mass-media, they could promote weight loss and explain the risks of being overweight
which then Valarie would have that motivation to lose weight and work on her body. This could be a
positive impact on Valarie as she would be able to lose weight and make that decision herself without
the feeling of anyone persuading her too or showing her the health risks
One communication technique that is the best for Valarie is the humanist technique. With the use of
communicating Maslow's hierarchy theory to Valarie and allowing her to put it into her life, it would
help overcome for Valarie needs such as motivational challenges. This would help Valarie as once she
has found safety (by getting a job), relationships (finding friends) and esteem (respect for herself and
others), she can reach her full potential which can then motivate her into losing weight as she would
have that respect for herself to not damage her body by being overweight as being overweight would
lead to several health factors. A positive impact it would have on Valarie is that she is able to be
financially secure and not rely on Univeral credits, she will be more confident as she has friends who
would boost her self-esteem and overall, her mental health would improve. This shows how beneficial
this communication technique is for Valarie as it’s a humanist approach which has been done on many
people before and it isn't singling out Valarie or making her feel different.
