Chapter 12: Motivation
- To sustain the success of an organisation, managers must ensure high levels of
performance from their staff. Motivation plays a key roles in attracting and retaining
talent as well as encouraging them to attain high levels of performance
- Motivation entails any influence (internal or external) that triggers or directs a person
to goal-directed behaviour
Categories of Theories
1. Individual differences
2. Job and organisational context theories
3. Managerial behaviour effects theories
4. Integration theories
1. Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
- Clayton Aldefer’s ERG theory - (Maslow’s compressed) growth, relatedness,
existence
- David McClelland’s Needs theory - 3 main motivators: power, achievement,
affiliation
2. Herzberg’s two factors theory - hygiene factors, motivating factors
- Job enrichment theory
- Equity theory
3. Reinforcement theory
- Goal setting theory
4. Basic expectancy theory
- Integrated expectancy
- Managers must be able to integrate the various insights provided by the said theories
to receive maximum benefits when managing people in an organisation
