Film and Lit Analysis: Ghosts
The Others is a horror movie written by Alejandro Amenabar and is it based on The Turn of the Screw which is written by Henry James. The film and the story are examples of effective film on the genre of psychological horror. They entail a plot that is haunting and the theme of suspense and presents an intense, moody atmosphere. The start of The Others is confusing since the black screen that seems not to soothe the mind of the audience. A mysterious feel is then presented with a burning candle that mimics ghosts. The brown paper illustrates that it came from an old book. The pictures of the sun and the animals give an illustration of the creation story. This makes the audience think of religion and supernatural power. The Turn of the Screw In both the film and the story, the children are strange. From the beginning of the story, the children are described as being sweet the moments they are first introduced. They are described as innocent, but as the story builds up, their words and their actions make the audience uncomfortable. The Others describe the kids as being photosensitive and thus they are kept in the dark places as the curtains of the house block the entry of light (Amenabar). Also, Anne seems to be communicating with a ghost called Victor even though Nicholas is afraid of ghosts. She is amused and keeps talking about Victor and the intruders. The Turn of the Screw also describes the children; Miles and Flora, as friendly but later we realize that the children are communicating with ghosts. The servants in both the film and the novel play a significant role. The servants have a close relationship with the children. In The Others, Anne is close to the servants and tells them about Victor and other intruders. There is some element of mystery about the three helpers in The Others since there are pages that are torn and later Grace realizes that it has pictures of her three servants. In the novel, the servants have been given the mandate to take care of Flora and Miles. The governess gets close to Miles and Flora as she was trying to find answers about the ghosts in the house.
