Sets are a fundamental concept in mathematics that allow us to group distinct objects together into a collective whole. A set is a precisely defined collection of different things that we treat as a single entity. The members making up a set, known as elements, can be numbers, people, letters, colors, or even other sets. Sets themselves are considered mathematical objects. There are several key ideas related to sets: Elements are the individual members belonging to a set. Each element is unique, with no repeats. Sets can be represented by listing elements in braces {}, like {1, 2, 3, 4} for the set of natural numbers less than 5. Other ways to denote sets include roster listings, set-builder notation using a rule to specify elements, and Venn diagrams. The number of elements in a set is its cardinality. For instance, {1, 2, 3} has cardinality 3. The empty set contains no elements and is shown as {} or ∅. A subset contains only elements also found in a larger set. We write A ⊆ B to mean A is a subset of B. The universal set is the collection of all elements under consideration. Intersection and union describe relationships between sets. The intersection A ∩ B is the set of elements common to both A and B. The union A ∪ B is the set of all elements in A, B, or both. The complement A' or A̅ contains the elements of the universal set not in A. Sets provide the basis for more advanced mathematical concepts like functions, relations, and probability. They are fundamental to mathematical reasoning and feature prominently in algebra, calculus, and discrete math.
