CHEM 121 Lab Report 2 ; Density Determination Name: Date: Experiment : 2 Title: Density Determination Purpose: In this experiment we will measure the density of some liquids including water and solids including bone of a cow, human fat tissue, chicken breast muscle. We also analyzed regular solids/ cylinders including nylon, walnut wood, teflon, copper, PVC - plastic, Aluminum, Brass and Translucent blue acrylic plastic. This was done to unde rstand how to calculate D=M/V Procedure: Have to obtain the mass of all the objects I have listed above. To start, have to place all the objects into a graduated cylinder to determine if there is water displacement. After the object is submerged, have to measure the volume of water. After the measurement of the water after have to calculate the combined mass by using the scale. Have to calculate the density of displacement and the density by geometry. Data/Results/Calculations: 1) Water at room temperature is 21.4 C Used a 10 ml Pipet 9.83 grams/10ml = 0.983 After added another 5 ml of water Now It is 15 ml of water 15ml= 15.54g/ml = 1.03 6 is the density of water There is a 5% error Add another 10 ml of water which now makes it 25 ml 25.49/25ml= 1.02 density It differs by 2% each time but in the lab they try to aim for 5% 2) Cow Bone Volume - Volume initial = 50 ml - 40 ml = 10 ml Mass = 20.24 grams Density by displacement = 20.24 g / 10 ml - 2.02 g/ml 3) Human fat tissue Volume = 2.9 ml Mass = 2.44 grams Density by displacement = 2.44 g/ 2.9 ml = 0.841 g/ml Literature Density of Fat = 0.90 g/ml 4) Chicken breast muscle Volume = 5.5 ml Mass = 5.52 grams Density by displacement = 5.52 g/ 5.5 ml = 1.00g/ml Literature Density of human muscle = 1.06 g/ml 5) Nylon Diameter = 1.60 cm Radius = 0.80 cm Length = 7.60 cm Cylinder Volume = pie ^2 | = (3.1416)(0.8^2) (7.60) = 15.28 cm ^3 Mass = 17.56 grams Density by geometry = 17.56 g/ 15.28 cm^3 = 1.15 g/cm^3 Cylinder Volume = Volume (final) - Volume (initial) = 45 ml - 30 ml = 15 ml Mass = 17.56 grams Density by displacement = 17. ml =1.17 g/ml Literature density of Nylon = 1. 15 g/cm^3 6) Walnut Wood - walnut wood will float in the cylinder, have to hold it down to read the density correctly Diameter = 1.64 cm Radius = 0.82 cm Length = 6.70 cm Cylinder Volume = pie ^2 | = (3.1416)(0.82^2) (6.70) = 14.15 cm^3 Mass =9.16 grams Density by geometry = 9.16 g/ 14.15 cm^3 = 0.65 g/cm^3 Cylinder Volume = Volume (final) - Volume (initial) = 44 ml - 30 ml = 14 ml Mass = 9.16 grams Density by displacement = 9.16 g/ 14 ml = 0.65 g/ml Literature density of Walnut wood = 0.64 g/cm^3
