Intrapersonal communication is the communication within an individual. It is each person’s “self-talk,” the internal discussion when thinking but not outwardly verbalizing thoughts. Interpersonal communication is communication between two people. This form of communication is the most common in nursing and requires an exchange of information with another individual. Public communication is communication within groups of people. Transpersonal communication is communication that addresses spiritual needs and provides interventions to meet these needs, such as prayer and meditation. Small group communication is communication within a group of people, often working toward a mutual goal, such as in committees, research teams, and support groups. Barriers to effective communication are asking irrelevant personal questions, offering personal opinions, stereotyping, giving advice, giving false reassurance, minimizing feelings, changing the topic, judging, offering value judgements, and arguing. Nurses must communicate clearly, respectfully, and professionally with all staff members. Faulty communication among the members of the health care team can have a negative effect on the work environment and on clients’ outcomes. Leadership and management are concepts that are integral to effective management and motivation of staff and clients. Management is the process of planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the work within an organization. Leadership is the ability to inspire others to achieve a desired outcome. INDIVIDUALIZED QUESTIONS 1.The nurse is preparing to delegate tasks to all team members. List five (5) tasks that can be delegated to the assistive personnel (AP). Suggested Management Learning Activity: Assignments, Delegation, and Supervision • Delegate an AP to measure the vital signs of a client who is postoperative and stable. • Delegate an AP to assist a client who has pneumonia to use a bedpan. • Delegate an AP to assist a client with a shower before a certain time. • Delegate an AP to ambulate a client. Observe the AP to ensure safe and correct ambulation. • Delegate an AP to reposition a client in bed. 2.The nurse has been assigned to float to another unit that she is unfamiliar with and has been given an assignment with five (5) high acuity clients. Identify how the nurse can address her concerns about a challenging assignment with conflict resolution strategies. Suggested Management Learning Activity: Management and Conflict Resolution • Nurses can use problem-solving and negotiation strategies to prevent a problem from evolving into a conflict. • Open communication among staff and between staff and clients can help defray the need for conflict resolution. • When potential sources of conflict exist, the use of open communication and problem-solving strategies are effective tools to de-escalate the situation. • Listen carefully to what others are saying, and try to understand their perspective. • Move a conflict that is escalating to a private location or postpone the discussion until a later time to give everyone a chance to regain control of their emotions. 3.A client with dementia is being admitted to a med surg unit with a diagnosis of pneumococcal pneumonia. Discuss what the client's rights are for this client. Suggested Management Learning Activity: Client Rights The client has the right to privacy and confidentiality, except as provided by law. • The client has the right to be treated with dignity, consideration and respect. • The client has the right to be protected from being abused or from being treated unfairly • The client has the right to honest, straightforward communications at all times. • The client (or legal guardian) has the right to accept or refuse services and to say they do not understand. • The client has the right to make complaints without fear of negative consequences. • All clients have the right to a grievance procedure if they feel that their rights have been violated or that they have been treated improperly. • The client has the right to choose the provider of their services. 4.A client recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor has decided that he no longer wants chemotherapy or radiation treatments, despite the fact that his provider feels it will extend his life for several months.
