Albert Ellis – Rational Emotive Behaviour a. Thought that much of our negative
Therapy (1955): thinking was developed during
childhood through conditioning.

b. Created the ABC model:
A: Activating event (external
situation or trigger)

B: Beliefs (individual's thoughts and
interpretations about the event)

C: Consequences (emotional and
behavioural reactions)

c. Believed that there are irrational
ideas in society … some are:

1. The idea that it is a necessity for
an adult to be loved or approved by
everyone for what they do.

2. The idea that one needs to be
competent and achieving.

3. The idea that certain people who
are evil or commit heinous crimes
must be punished.

4. The idea that human unhappiness
is caused externally.
