Medical Laboratory Technology Program MLT207 Clinical Immunohematology Fall Laboratory Procedure Manual
Course Goals The goal of this course is to facilitate the student’s ability both to understand the principles of the clinical laboratory including, but not limited to red blood cells and their disorders, white blood cells and their disorders and coagulation. The course provides a simple, straightforward approach to clarify complex concepts, and a discipline-by-discipline approach to help students build the knowledge needed to confidently perform medical laboratory diagnostics tests and ensure accurate, effective results. Instructors 1. Allyson Dworacek MLT(ASCP)CM MT(AMT) 2. Lisa M. Shave M.S., MLS(ASCP)CMSBBCM Grading This course is combined with the lecture portion of the MLT207: Clinical Immunohematology to provide students with an opportunity to gain hands-learning experiences with diagnostic testing using personal protective equipment. There will be pre-laboratory lectures and hands-on exercises for this course. In addition, there may be assignments that are due pre-lab or post-lab which will assist in the student’s ability to apply knowledge gained through reading and performing procedures. Attendance Policy This course is designed as face-to-face laboratory sessions. Students MUST attend all Weekly Laboratory classes. There are NO makeups. Excessive absence is considered if a student misses more than 10% of the meeting days. Then, they must report to a mandatory consultation with the Instructor to develop a corrective action plan. A student must follow this plan. If the student continues to miss more than 20% of a course’s meeting days or does not follow the action plan, the student will be dismissed from the course with a W or receive a grade of F if the course is past the college’s withdrawal period. Lateness/Exits Students are allowed two (2) unexcused lateness's or exits from class. Each additional lateness or exit will result in a half a letter grade deduction. Lateness is defined as appearing for class 10 minutes or more after the start of the scheduled Session. Exit is defined as leaving a class for 10 minutes or more while it is in progress and returning, or leaving early from a class that is in progress. Professional Evaluations These address the affective aspects (integrity, organization, independence, etc.). of a student’s development into a professional medical laboratory technician. These evaluations will be performed weekly and will be based on student’s behavior in the laboratory setting (but will look at overall performance as well). The evaluations might affect the final letter grade after all cognitive and psychomotor evaluations are complete. Please refer to the course outline3 | P a g e .
