1.) The Alchemist and Santiago spent the night enjoying a meal and discussing his
personal legend, the alchemist encouraged Santiago to trade in his camel for a horse,
so he did. While they rode into the desert they had troubles finding life there. The
horse found life, the Alchemist grabbed a cobra snake from a hole, which is a
ferocious animal who could kill a human in minutes. The Alchemist surely had been
bitten, though he is almost 200 years old so he must have had an experience with a
snake before. They found life which was the omen they needed. For Santiago to
continue his journey, he must leave Fatima. Santiago does not want to leave her, as to
him, Fatima is his treasure. If Santiago stays on his quest, he will become the
counselor of the oasis, meaning he could buy whatever and marry Fatima.
The theme of our section is sacrifice, this is because Santiago finally had the courage to leave
Fatima, so that he can complete his journey.
3.) Santiago asks about the emerald tablet, the alchemist draws in the sand something that
appears as a code. He refers to the emerald tablet as “the portal to the soul of the world”. The
portal to the soul of the world unifies force that leads all things to their destiny. “God created
the world so that, through its visible objects, men could understand his spiritual teachings
and the marvels of his wisdom” the Alchemist explained to Santiago. The alchemist then says
“since you are in the desert, you will not have time to study the emerald tablet. Instead
immerse yourself in it. The desert will give you a better understanding of the world’’. When
the alchemist said ‘’immerse yourself in it’’ he meant for santiago to follow his heart. They
then begin talking about his dreams and wishes.
