Children - ANS-children can consume whole milk for up to their 2 years old and when they
become 3 they can consume low fat milk
-prevent children from consuming foods that are easily to swallow such as popcorn and pretzels
until they are four because of the choking hazard
-cut foods that are larger than the childs trachea such as grapes
-avoid giving children high amounts of celery and peanut butter because of the risk for
aspiration, and should spread the peanut butter on a thin piece
TPN-if there is a delay is getting a new fluid bag - ANS-to avoid hypoglycemia the nurse should
infuse 10 or 20 percent in water until the next bag arrives
-don't stop a TPN flow
-never abruptly stop a TPN
Cancer patients using chemotherapy - ANS-use plastic utensils
-increase fluid intake
-don't eat foods when they are hot
-suggest the client try tart foods to improve taste
Prenatal education - ANS-let the newborn eat for five minutes at a time on the first day to
promote milk production
-instruct the clients to breastfeed on demand when the newborn show signs of hunger usually 8
to 12 times a day
-avoid giving infants fluids other than breast milk
-not to offer other supplemental forms of milk
Chrons Disease - ANS-eat eggs for breakfast because they are easy to digest and high in
protein
-follow a low lactose diet because they may not be able to digest dairy products
-avoid things high in fiber to minimize bowel stimulation
-avoid snacks and canned fruits and any other containing high fructose
Dysphasia patients - ANS-gently palpate the clients throat during swallowing
-place at a 90 degree angle not 45
-inspect for food pockets in the mouth
-allow the client to rest 30 minutes before meals
-position the clients chin down during swallowing
Lactose intolerance - ANS-flatulence,bloating,and cramping are normal findings of lactose
intolerance
