Among African Americans, the population increase was significant. It went from 28,000 in 1701 to 500,000 by 1775. The cause for the population growth was due to a high level of immigration and and a higher birthrate. Fertile land and a dependable food supply resulted in higher European immigration and was able to support raising large families.
