Table of definitions
Chromosome- thread-like structures forming the chromatin network in the
nucleus of the cell; occur in homologous pairs
Gene- short section of DNA with nucleotides in a specific order to code for a
particular protein on characteristic
Locus- position of the gene on the chromosome
Allele- carry different information about the same characteristic (one allele from
the maternal homolog and one from the paternal homolog)
Genotype- genetic makeup of an organism
Phenotype- physical expression of the genotype
Homozygous- individual where the 2 alleles for the characteristic are the same
Heterozygous- 2 alleles are different
Dominant and Recessive Alleles- dominant can be seen in both heterozygous
and homozygous forms while recessive can only be seen in the homozygous form
F1 Generation- first set of offspring after crossing the parent generation
F2 Generation- First set of offspring after crossing the F2 generation
