, THE LANGUAGE OF FASHION:

Style:
- Characterise a product such as a V-neck, tailored jacket, pull-overs.

Style and fashion relationship:
- Style only becomes in fashion when it is accepted by a large group of
people.
- Style only remains in fashion as long as its accepted. E.g., stovepipe
pants will always be a style but only a fashion when many people wear
it. Now known as skinny jeans.
- Styles are very seldom accepted by EVERYONE, fashion varies between
different groups.

Classic styles:
- Continually accepted as they are timeless.
- Little Black Dress

Fads:
- Catches on in a group of people.
- Disappears just as quickly as it appears.

Fashion trends:
- It’s always changing.
- Sometimes changes are drastic such as skirt lengths, but mostly subtle
so only a keen observer will notice.

Influences that determine contemporary fashion:
1. The blurring of gender boundaries.
2. Cultural and social events such as Royal Weddings in Britain and
Monaco, popular TV shows, celebrities, or styles from the past. Cultural
include Afrocentric made up of beads, prints and animals.
3. Economic factors such as consume incomes.

Fashion Revivals: Retrospective Fashions
- When designers turn to history (earlier periods) for inspiration.
- Styles never come back the exact same, they are usually adapted to
suit the current needs and lifestyle.
- In 2010s there were elements of the 60s, 70ss, and 90s.
- The Roaring Twenties are coming back into style.
Such as the flapper dress (sleeveless dress that hangs straight and
loose, with a waistline at the hips and a hem anywhere from the knee
to the calf), and headbands.
- It has become popular to wear vintage clothing as it is more
environmentally friendly. Recycling or reusing garments saves resources
and money.
