Economic Impacts
The Lake District is becoming a more and more popular place to visit, and over the
years they have seen an increase in visitor numbers which really benefits the local and
national economy. With the rural area doing so well the area would expect to see
increased employment which opens up jobs for the locals and prevents some, but not
all from being unemployed. Also with more and more people visiting the Lake District
will result in them spending money on small independent businesses such as
restaurants, activity centres, cafes, visitor attractions and B&B’s. With visitors spending
more money will increase revenue for businesses which means they will have the
money to employ more members of staff and to grow their business.
However an increase in visitor numbers can also have negative economic impacts on
rural areas. If there are lots of tourists visiting an area businesses might decide to put
prices up which will increase living costs for the locals. This can deter people from
living in the Lake District if the area is too expensive to live in. Also some tourists will
only visit the Lake District at certain times of the year, usually when the weather is nice
in the summer because they mainly go there to experience the great outdoors. This
results in seasonal employment which isn’t good for the economy as people will have
to money to live during peak season. Seasonal employment also results in low paid
employment which could lead to income leakages as it mi9ght not be the locals getting
the jobs but other people travelling to the Lake District just to work in the summer and
then move back home. This means they will spend their income in other areas.
