Why do traditions matter?
It’s Christmas Eve, I’m sitting next to a pile of presents waiting for them to be opened, I already see
my name on one of the gifts, there’s a feeling of curiosity and excitement. I’m surrounded by the
people I love the most; my brothers, my mother and my father, it gives me a feeling of safety and
warmth. This memory makes me remember what’s most important in life; family. However,
nowadays we’re starting to believe that traditions are unnecessary, and don’t add anything to our
lives. So, what’s the importance of traditions and why are they worth celebrating?
Well, first of all, in traditions we can honor our ancestors, and what they’ve done for us. All the
sacrifices they have brought, consider all the soldiers who have risked their lives, just so that we can
live. Take Remembrance Day, it provides us with an extremely wonderful opportunity to respect and
honor them. Traditions never let us forget who have shaped our lives, and for who we should be
thankful.
However, traditions don’t always have to be huge, like Remembrance Day, they can also be a bit
smaller. Even a handshake or a prayer can be seen as a tradition, they are small actions in life, but
they brighten our day, so traditions can also make us smile, and make us enjoy small events.
So, what else is a reason why traditions are worth celebrating, why they are important, and why they
are valuable? Well, traditions make us remember our childhood. They make us remember the great
memories we have of celebrating them. Therefore, lets all think about a memory of you as a child
celebrating a holiday tradition, such as Saint Nicholais, Christmas, or your birthday. You were
probably too excited that you couldn’t sleep the night before. But, when that tradition finally arrived,
you were the happiest child on Earth. Traditions make us feel that kind of joy again, they let our inner
child come out.
To sum up, traditions can make us feel happy, make us enjoy small moments in life, and make us feel
the kind of joy we felt when we were younger. Therefore, lets all clear our agenda the next time
there’s a holiday tradition coming up, and lets enjoy and celebrate it fully. It will make us appreciate
life a bit more. We need traditions, we need traditions to make us relive the memories we have as a
child, to respect our ancestors, and most importantly, to feel happy.
Thank you for your attention.
