A postmodern story can be defined as a narrative that challenges traditional storytelling
conventions and explores themes of fragmentation, irony, and self-reflexivity. It often
blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction, and emphasizes the subjectivity and
relativity of truth.



One of the features of a postmodern story is the use of fragmented narratives and
nonlinear storytelling. This can be seen in "Having a Ball" as the story jumps from one
thought to another, without following a linear timeline. For example, the narrator talks
about loving parties, then mentions the food, and switches to being the host without any
logical progression.



Another feature is the use of metafiction and self-reflexivity. In "Having a Ball," the
narrator, who is revealed to be a dog named Spot, refers to itself as a "host" and
mentions its human pets. This breaks the traditional boundaries between human and
animal perspectives, blurring fiction and reality.



Postmodern stories also often incorporate irony and playfulness. In the story, the
narrator mentions being a fussy eater but then contradicts itself by saying it will eat
anything. This ironic statement adds a playful tone to the narrative and challenges the
reader's expectations.



The story also exemplifies intertextuality, which is another feature of postmodernism.
