Unit 1: AC1.2 Plans

Individual Crime-
Domestic Abuse:

Personal Reasons
 Fear (They may fear that if they report it and nothing is found or done, then the abuse will worsen)
 Shame (A person may feel ashamed to report the abuse as they might get ridiculed for being weak or
maybe the persons family already had an issue with the partner, so out of pride, the person doesn’t
want to prove them right)

Social/Cultural Reasons
 Lack of knowledge (People may feel deterred from reporting domestic abuse as they might be unsure
about the situation and whether they just misunderstood it. They also may not know the background
surrounding the couple)
 Lack of media attention (While awareness to domestic abuse is rising, it is still rarely seen in the media
and when it is, it’s usually only to do with celebrities or when the DA has gone too far and resulted in
death. Therefore, it's hard to spot DA early on)

Hate Crime:

Personal Reasons
 Fear (Especially for other minorities, it's easy to just walk past a hate crime, out of fear you will also
be targeted. It’s hard for the victim to speak out in fear as well)
 Not affected (People may not report hate crime due to the fact it's not affecting them, and would
rather keep it that way instead of trying but getting targeted too)

Social/Cultural Reasons
 Lack of media attention (The media rarely shows hate crime and when it does, it tends to be a very
biased view and shows the protests against hate crime, as bad and violent when they should be
bringing awareness to the actual hate crime)
 Too complex (Hate crime is very broad, so people may feel deterred since they might think reporting
one instance won't change a thing due to the wide scale of hate crime there is)

Honour Crime:

Personal Reasons
 Not affected (If a person isn’t affected by this crime, it’s very easy to skip over it as it's not a regular
occurrence so there are many excuses to give)
 Shame (People who are victims to honour crime may already feel ashamed and be indoctrinated to
think they deserve whatever happened to them, so will feel deterred to try and report it)

Social/Cultural Reasons
 Culture bound (People may feel deterred from reporting it since they may feel it’s not their place to
try and say anything due to the fact this may be a regular occurrence in other cultures and is so
normalised)
 Lack of media attention (Since honour crime is very rare in the UK, it’s normal there would be barely
any media coverage on it and if there is, it would be in other countries. Therefore, people may feel
like they don’t have to worry about it since there's such a low chance of it happening here)

Moral Crime-

Personal Reasons
 Not affected (People who witness moral crime would most likely walk past and ignore it due to it
being a victimless crime, meaning no one is really being harmed so it shouldn’t be made into a big
deal)
 Shame (People engaging in moral crime may feel ashamed to report themselves as it puts them into a
spotlight for people to judge the lifestyle, they’ve put themselves into)

Social/Cultural Reasons
 Lack of knowledge (People may choose not to report moral crime because they feel they don’t have
enough knowledge to judge the situation, for example, just because someone is homeless doesn’t
necessarily mean they don’t receive support)
 Lack of media attention (Because moral crimes aren't reported in media, most people won't know
some moral crimes are actual crimes so would walk past a drug user or homeless person with
sympathy rather than the need to report them)
