Unit 3 – The UK as a Destination
P3 – Describe the features and facilities that attract visitors to three UK destinations
The three UK destinations are
 Bath - Cultural/Historic Town
 Blackpool – Coastal Resort
 Forest of Dean – Countryside Area

The
Forest
The Forest of Dean is a country side area, which has approximately 380 English Heritage sights within
the area. In 2013, the Forest of Dean had 266,300 staying visitor trips and 946,000 staying night

of Dean
visitors as well as 2,601,000 day visits. At least 323,000 are inbound tourists, and at least 890,000 of
the visits are domestic visitors.

Location
Accessibility
 The River Severn forms the southern border of the Forest of Dean district and provides a barrier
which can only be overcome via the Severn Bridges towards the Bristol area in the west and via the
A40 towards Gloucester in the east. As stated before the Forest is economically highly dependent on
its transport links with surrounding centres and traffic on the A40 is heavy and congestion may
increase. This is useful for both inbound and outbound visitors as they will be able to access The
Forest of Dean via car or coach.

 Visitors can also access the Forest of Dean via train. There is a train station located in Lydney. For
inbound visitors they can get the train from Cardiff Airport, or Bristol Airport.

Natural Features
 Natural features attract visitors to the Forest of Dean.
 The Forest of Dean is situated in the Wye Valley which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,
and the River Wye runs through the valley. On the River Wye, you can canoe down the river
between different destinations, such as Hereford to Ross-on-Wye. This attracts people who want
to come to the area to do sporting activities, such as families with children.

,  Hence its name, there are lots of woodland walks to do. A popular one is called Puzzle Wood. It is a
forest which looks enchanted and magical. Like something out of a fairy tale. This has been used a
film sets. This mainly attracts families with young children as they love the whole fairy tale thing.

Built Attractions
 Built attractions attract visitors to the Forest of Dean.
 In the Forest of Dean they have the Sculpture Trail. The Trail Features sculptures created by
artists to interpret the Forest environment and the history of this very unusual landscape. The
Forest of Dean Sculpture Trust and The Forestry Commission have worked in partnership for the
last 29 years to create this vital Sculpture Trail that enjoys visitors of over 300,000 people per
year. The trail is 4 miles long. It gives people a unique opportunity to walk through the
woodlands and discover art along the way. The sculpture trail is perfect for all ages, it is also
good for people who are interested in art. However you do not have to be really into art to enjoy
the trail, people love what they see.
 Another built attraction they have in the Forest of Dean is GoApe. GoApe is a tree top adventure
activity. They have zip wires and Tarzan swings and loads of other obstacles high up in the trees.
You can also hire Segway’s. GoApe is aimed at people who like to do adventurous things. It is also
highly popular with families.
