Great Depression - ANSWER-A period lasting from 1929 to 1941 in which the U.S. economy was in severe decline and millions of Americans were unemployed. Dust Bowl - ANSWER-In the Great Plains regions of the U.S. The area of dust/damaged farms across a 150,000sq/mile region during the early 1930's. Great Plains - ANSWER-Many farmers moved (migrated to the West Coast to start over) Herbert Hoover - ANSWER-Republican President () who believed in Laissez-Faire, "rugged individualism," and trickle-down economics. Did not believe in giving direct aid from the federal government to victims of the depression. He believed people could take care of themselves "rugged individualism" and that help from the federal government would take away their independence. Bonus Army - ANSWER-WWI veterans were promised a bonus by Congress to be paid in the 1940's. In 1932, the depression was severe. The veterans asked for their bonuses early because they were desperate for money for survival. 12,000-15,000 vets marched to Washington D.C. demanding this payment early. The Senate backed by Hoover denied the payments. The U.S. army was instructed to remove protestors with tear gas and bayonets. One veteran protestor was shot to death. This event made Hoover very unpopular and was another reason historians believe he lost the next election to Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR). FDR Franklin Delano Roosevelt - ANSWER-Democratic President died in office during WWII. He believed in giving direct relief (jobs and money) to the people! This is called "pump-priming" economics. His program was called the NEW DEAL. The New Deal - ANSWER-President Franklin Roosevelt's programs to fight the Great Depression. Using the idea of direct relief to the jobless and poor this program uses "pump-priming" economics. Giving government jobs and money (welfare) to the poor to immediately help them. Goals of the New Deal are - Relief to the needy, Recovery - help the economy recover from the Depression, and Reform - Fix the economy so we never have another serious depression again! First 100 days - ANSWER-Name given to the first 100 days in office of FDR's presidency when Congress passed many New Deal programs.
