Sustainability is an important consideration in projects implemented in developing
countries. Often projects in developing countries will be initiated after initial funding from
a donor funder, however it is important that a project continues even after the initial
donor funding ends. Discuss how Leon, Schneider and Daviaud (2012) is used as a
framework for reviewing and assessing sustainability of software projects in developing

The phenomenon of “pilotitis” relates to information systems projects implemented in
developing countries that are piloted using initial donor funding which however do not
go beyond the piloting phase, and thus lack sustainability. In respect of the OpenMRS
project discuss factors that have been important in its sustainability since its piloting in
the early 2000s. Consider technological as well as organizational factors. As
background, OpenMRS is an important software platform for developing electronic
health records in developing countries. It has now been classified a global health good
because of its prominence and importance.
