P1
As part of my report I have been exploring two contrasting business to compare ownership,
type of business and purpose, so I will inform about the different type of business used by
Tesco and Oxfam and their purposes and how they are being used by those.
Tesco is a British multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer, founded by Jack
Cohen in 1919, it is the third largest retailer in the world measured by profits and the fifth
largest retailer in the world measured by revenues. People think it is an international
business, however it is a global business because it has stores in 14 different countries
across Europe, Asia and North America, having around of 300,000 employers and 2,900
stores.
Oxfam is an international confederation of charitable organisations, it has been working on
the global poverty, it was founded in 1942 in Oxford as consequence of the second world
war to fight hunger. It is formed by 18 non-governmental organisations which means, no
profit organisation that helps other people without expecting anything in return.
A limited company is a group of people who come together to form, manage and control a
business, limited companies need to be registered before they operate. The owners of this
are its shareholders because they are the ones who manage the company, and they also
select directors to represent their interests and benefits. I can say that Tesco is a public
limited company (PLC, because its shares can be brought on the share market, so it is
globally recognized as a company that sells a variety of different products and services.
Oxfam is also a limited company however, it is a charity, which means a no profit maker
organisation, a charity is an organisation that raise funds to support and help needed
people. Its objective, as I said is to help others without expecting anything in return, making
it part of the voluntary sector, the business is also supervised by the trustees, who are
voluntaries with a responsible reputation, most of the charities paid for their workers and
managers but Oxfam is not one of these, Oxfam as a voluntary organisation confide in the
good acts of their workers.
Tesco and Oxfam have different purposes and objectives in their business, Tesco’s main
purpose is to create value for customers to earn their loyalty, so they provide good products
and services that are absolutely cheap and affordable, but it also has other aims such as,
create profits from articles sold and satisfy consumers with their quality products however,
the Oxfam purpose is to help people that need support and maintenance, these two types
business given are totally different because they don’t share any relation to their intentions,
for example Oxfam goal is to find a solution for the injustice of global poverty and economic
inequality nonetheless, Tesco objectives are growing up as an organization and expand their
business in other places in the world as it has been doing in the last years.
